28 Aug Staff Spotlight: Sue Smith
Sue Smith has worked for Especially for Children – Edina/Edinborough since August of 1987, making her the teacher with the second-longest tenure in the company!
Tell us a bit about yourself…
My husband Steve and I celebrated our 40th anniversary this year! We have lived in Edina for many years and in the Edinborough condos for the last 14 years. I have a 2-minute commute across the parking lot!
Outside of work, I enjoy spending time with our son, Jason, daughter-in-law, Stephanie and our grandson, Ben. He is 11 years old, an EFC graduate and a hockey player. We also enjoy spending time in Florida, going on cruises and shopping–Kmart is my “happy place.” 🙂
What is special about working with children?
There is never a dull moment or two days that are the same. We are laughing all the time. I love to see their excited faces when I introduce a new activity.
What unique qualities or skills have you brought to EFC/the classroom over the years?
I have a lot of energy and enthusiasm. I enjoy making toys and activities for children from household materials. I have been sharing my ideas by presenting workshops for other teachers.
What is different about early childhood education since you started in the field? What is the same?
In 1980, when I started teaching, we planned activities without much thought into what the children were learning. Now we put a lot of thought and effort into every activity we present to the children. Children have the same eagerness to learn as in 1980!
Why have you stayed with Especially for Children?
I love that EFC is a small company. We have the freedom to plan for the children according to their needs and interests.
Do you have any special memories you would like to share?
I love when past students come to visit. One of “my” toddlers even worked at EFC during college!
